BRONX, NEW YORK, August 23, 2017 — Unique People Services (UPS) Executive Director Yvette Brissett-Andre will be honored at the 2017 Friends of Asha Niketan Luncheon at Gargiulo’s Restaurant in Coney Island on Thursday, September 14, 2017. The annual fundraiser recognizes outstanding nonprofit leaders and human service professionals who have dedicated themselves to making a difference for individuals in need. More than 150 guests are expected to attend this year’s event, with proceeds benefitting the Connecticut-based Friends of Asha Niketan Inc., a nonprofit led by Usha Venkataraghavan that provides support services to developmentally disabled individuals in India.
As Executive Director of UPS, Brissett-Andre oversees the agency’s programs and services for individuals with developmental disabilities, HIV/AIDS and mental health challenges. She brings more than two decades of experience in strategic planning, program development and contract management. Her commitment to enhancing the lives of others has been instrumental in executing major fundraising campaigns to expand the agency and impact communities across New York City. This fall, Brissett-Andre will lead UPS in its newest initiative, the opening of its first affordable housing complex, Lynn’s Place, named after UPS’ late founder, Lynn Wonsang. A project several years in the making, Lynn’s Place will help to ease rising housing costs for low income New Yorkers (part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s plan to provide 15,000 units of affordable housing in the next 15 years), while providing essential support services to individuals with serious mental health disorders. In October, Brissett-Andre and her staff will be presenting UPS’ 26th Anniversary Gala, marking nearly three decades of outstanding service. When she’s not leading UPS, Brissett-Andre serves on the Board of Directors of Mental Health News Education, Inc. (MHNE) and on the Board of the Interagency Council of New York.
“It’s wonderful to be recognized by my fellow human services professionals and to be among such a hard-working, passionate group focused on providing life-changing services,” Brissett-Andre said. “This award comes at a very special time for Unique People Services as we prepare to celebrate 26 incredible years and the expansion of vital programs. Many thanks to Friends of Asha Niketan for this wonderful honor and to my extraordinary staff for helping to spread our mission of Understanding People, Providing Homes and Serving Communities.”
