INDIVIDUAL OF THE MONTH
LARRY SMITH – FEBRUARY 2012
In 2000, Larry’s mother fell ill and he maintained the responsibility of caring for her, which included taking her for dialysis treatment. In 2001, Larry lost his mom to the illness and this had a devastating effect on his mental health. He went to live with his brother but this was an unsuccessful housing arrangement for Larry. Larry knew he needed more support and began seeing a therapist. His therapist set up a placement interview with Unique People Services, Haven Apartment community residence. Larry Smith was accepted into our Haven Apartments in 2004.
While at Haven, Larry had his own studio apartment and took pride in keeping it clean. He worked with his Case Manager and developed his skills to meet his goal of independent living. During this time, he met the love of his life, Paula Gonzalez. Larry maintained focus on his goal of independent living and achieved it in 2007 when he moved into a 1 bedroom apartment supported by UPS’ Supported Housing Program, where he currently resides. Currently, Larry and Paula reside in this apartment and they have a son named Mathias Smith. Larry says “he is the best joy I ever received in my life.”
Larry began working as an Intern (stipend worker) at Unique People Services’ Administrative Office in 2006, as our part-time Maintenance/Messenger. He continues to work at the Administrative office as a member of the staff. He has proven himself to be a diligent hard-worker, flexible with the array of duties he has been entrusted with, someone who comes to work everyday cheerfully and ready for the days work.
Larry was honored at our 20th Anniversary celebration and continues to do well. He is very grateful to the staff at both the Haven apartments and the Supported Housing program for their support in helping him achieve his life goals and providing housing for him and his family. For these accomplishments, while at Unique People Services, we commend Larry today.
