Art Program

Art is a wonderful means for Individuals with sensory, perceptual, cognitive, and physical disabilities to better understand their world and to learn to freely express themselves.

The brain child of our Activities Coordinator -Lisa Paige - Unique People Services began an art program in the recreation room of the Bright Harp IRA residence. The program has been in existence for only five (5) months and is open to all our Individuals with Developmental Disabilities who want to participate.

Under the tutelage of volunteer and professional artist - Gavin Thompson -(owner of Gravitees Production located in Brooklyn NY) a group of Developmentally Disabled individuals meet monthly on a Saturday from 10am to 12pm.  Both Lisa Paige and Gavin Thompson are sensitive to the learning deficits and multiple intelligence levels of the participants.  Both work at engaging the individuals in: learning, stimulating memory, enhancing symbolic communication and promoting positive relationships.

Focus in this early stage of the program has been addressing issues from eye hand coordination to improving motor skills to free style thinking.  The Individuals are given opportunities to learn, understand and integrate new experiences. They enjoy coming to and participating in the planned activities.

We are proud of this new beginning.
